Traffic lights will be installed at the points where some of Victoria's busiest freeways meet in an attempt to alleviate traffic congestion.

Nine new sets of traffic lights will be installed from December at the merge points of Victorian freeways including the Monash, Tullamarine and Calder freeways, VicRoads CEO John Merritt told 3AW on Thursday.

"The time that you will lose (at the traffic lights) will be more than made up by the travelling faster when you actually get onto the freeway, and we've measured this to every inch of its life to know that this is true," he said.
