Trainee pro Wilson wins WA Open

Victorian trainee pro Jack Wilson has won the WA Open in a playoff with New Zealand's Nick Gillespie.

Jack Wilson made history as the first trainee pro to win a PGA Tour of Australasia tournament when he triumphed in the WA Open in Kalgoorlie.

The 22-year-old from Melbourne's Kingswood GC led after each of the first three rounds but had to overcome New Zealander Nick Gillespie in a sudden-death playoff after they finished level at 10-under par on Sunday.

"It's amazing. It's a goal that I really wanted to achieve," said Wilson.

"I always want to be the first to do things and hopefully this is just the start.

Wilson beat Gillespie at the first extra hole after shooting a closing even-par 72 to tie the Kiwi who had shot a 69.

Gillespie collected $16,500 for his win but was more excited at gaining entry to the big events coming up in the next two months as he's now exempt on tour to the end of 2014.

"I'm so pumped to have the opportunity to play the Perth International, Australian PGA and Australian Open," said Wilson.

"I was looking for invites, but now there's no need.

"The money is great, but it's playing these events and having these opportunities that's really huge for me."

Former US PGA Tour player James Nitties (NSW) was a shot further back in a tie for third with South Australia's Adam Bland after both shot closing 70s.

Wilson led comfortably for most of the final round before double bogeying the 15th hole.
