Trans Tasman support for start-ups

An Australian start-up accelerator has teamed up wth a New Zealand counterpart to help foster entreprenuers and new businesses.

Australia and New Zealand have joined forces to help innovative new businesses get off the ground.

Entrepreneurs on either side of the Tasman will be connected and offered greater access to potential investors and customers by Australian business start-up accelerator muru-D and New Zealand growth hub The Icehouse.

"New Zealand is well known for its healthy entrepreneurial environment, so it made sense for us to look across the Tasman for our first global partnership," muru-D co-founder Annie Parker said.

"In today's global economy we cannot operate in isolation."

muru-D is backed by Telstra and provides a $40,000 seed capital investment in return for six per cent equity in start-up businesses.

The Icehouse has assisted more than 250 start-ups in New Zealand over 14 years, helping them raise $117 million in funding.

"We've been very impressed with the calibre of muru-D's start-ups and the ecosystem it has built to support them," The Icehouse chief executive Andy Hamilton said.

muru-D has so far supported businesses including TripALocal, which connects travellers with local hosts for authentic holiday experiences, and FreightExchange, which enables freight transporters to sell unused capacity to businesses needing to ship goods.
