Transformers sequel is biggest earner

The Transformers sequel has topped the list of the most profitable films of 2014, earning $US1.1 billion at the global box office.

The fourth instalment in the Transformers franchise has been named the highest-grossing film of 2014.

Transformers: Age of Extinction, starring Mark Wahlberg, topped a list of 2014's most profitable movies by bringing in $US1.1 billion ($A1.19 billion) at the global box office, seeing off competition from Guardians of the Galaxy, which trailed in second with $US772 million.

Angelina Jolie's turn in Disney's Maleficent was another big seller, taking third place in the list with $US758 million, ahead of a superhero sequels X-Men: Days of Future Past and Captain America: The Winter Soldier in fourth and fifth place respectively.
