Veteran coach Giovanni Trapattoni is in talks with the Ivory Coast football federation to be appointed coach of the national squad, Italian media reported Friday.
It was unclear whether the 74-year-old Italian would take over from French coach Sabri Lamouchi, 42, before the start of the World Cup in Brazil on June 12, or be appointed after the tournament.
The Ivory Coast qualified for their third consecutive World Cup and are to play Colombia, Greece, and Japan in Group C. They are the highest placed African team in the FIFA rankings.
Trapattoni began coaching in 1974 after playing as midfielder for AC Milan and Varese. He won 10 national titles managing clubs in Italy, Germany, Portugal, and Austria.
