Treasurer coy on chance of 'mini budget'

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg won't say whether will deliver a budget of some kind before Australians next go to the polls.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has not ruled out drawing up a budget of his own ahead of the next election.

Mr Frydenberg refused to speculate when asked if he would consider delivering a mini budget or an early full budget ahead of the upcoming federal poll, which is due by May 2019.

"I'll keep my thoughts to conversations between me and the prime minister," he told the ABC on Sunday.

His comments follow figures released this week showing the economy had grown at its fastest annual pace since the peak of the mining boom six years ago.

The better-than-expected figures will be reflected in the government's final budget outcome later this month and mid-year economic update in December, the treasurer said.

But he was also coy on whether they would help bring the budget back to surplus earlier than anticipated in 2020/21.

"I'm not going to speculate as to what it will do to the final bottom line."

Australians' spending played a big role in growth in the three months to June but people also saved less, the Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showed.

The opposition maintains the growth data doesn't tell the whole story, with people dipping into their savings to meet the rising costs of living.

"Household figures look much less rosy," Labor spokesman Andrew Leigh said.
