Senior Australian of the Year, Fred Chaney, says he thinks the idea of treaties with individual Aboriginal groups or nations has some merit.

The idea has been floated by the head of the federal government's Indigenous Advisory Council, Warren Mundine.

Mr Chaney, a former Liberal Party Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, was named Senior Australian of the Year for his contribution to reconciliation and human rights.

He's told NITV's Natalie Ahmat that the idea of treaty has been quite contentious for a long time.
