Tributes at Sydney's Indonesian consulate

Flowers and messages of protest have been laid outside the Indonesian consulate in Sydney following the execution of two Australians.

"I pity your heart Joko".

It's the simple yet powerful message tied to the front gate of the Indonesian consulate in Sydney in the hours after Andrew Chan's and Myuran Sukumaran's execution.

As Australians woke to news that the two convicted drug smugglers had faced the firing squad in Indonesia, people have started to lay flowers at the consulate in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

A candle has been lit outside the front gate and sits among three bunches of yellow bouquets.

Two long-stemmed flowers, with a poignant quote from Nelson Mandela, have been tied to the gate.

"You will achieve more in this world through acts of mercy than you will with acts of retribution" the message states.

The handwritten note finishes with the reference, "I pity your heart Joko", to Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

Maroubra resident, 71-year-old Ray Andrews, has never protested before, but as he learned of the "cruel and unnecessary" execution of Chan and Sukumaran on Wednesday he felt compelled to lay flowers and a handwritten sign.

"They wanted to live and they had something to contribute," he told AAP.

Mr Andrews wanted his small contribution to be on behalf of the equally outraged Australians who couldn't reach the Indonesian consulate.

"All those Australians, perhaps in the deep middle of the country, that can't say a word, they have got a word," he said.

"I hope my lousy two flowers and sign make them feel like they do."

Australia Federal Police are also at the consulate.
