Refugee advocates have praised former PM Malcolm Fraser for his compassion in accepting large numbers of refugees from Vietnam during his time in office.

The Fraser government accepted nearly 56,000 refugees from Vietnam between 1975 and 1983.

One of the refugees who benefited from the policy was the former head of SBS Radio Quang Luu who fled to Australia by boat in 1975.

He has told Michael Kenny, the policy marked a major turning point for Asian migration to Australia.
