Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs will return to the Senate estimates witness stand on Friday.

Professor Triggs, Attorney-General George Brandis and senior officials of his department were grilled for almost six hours last month over her report into children in immigration detention and whether she'd been asked to resign.

The legal and constitutional affairs estimates committee decided the questioning had gone on long enough and adjourned it until this Friday.

Prof Triggs is expected to respond to a number of claims made by Senator Brandis and his senior officials.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has described The Forgotten Children report as a political stitch-up and said the government had lost confidence in the commission president.

The government has denied offering another job to Prof Triggs as an incentive to get her to resign.

But Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has said "a role was raised that related to international affairs" in discussions between Prof Triggs and secretary of the attorney-general's department secretary Chris Moraitis.

However, it was not made clear who raised the role.

The report, which covered the final months of the Labor government as well as the start of the coalition government, found credible evidence that detention had significantly damaged children.
