Three Australian security guards working at Manus Island detention centre were fired over a recent incident involving a local woman, the immigration department has confirmed.

The department said it is surprised by PNG police comments that implied the trio were returned to Australia in order to avoid a possible investigation.

"The implication that the Wilsons staff were removed to avoid prosecution, or removed without consultation with relevant PNG authorities, is simply wrong," the department said.
