Truck crashes into home with family inside

The driver of a semi-trailer may have had a seizure when he crashed into a home with four people inside, in the NSW town of Rutherford.

It is an "absolute miracle" no one was injured after a semi-trailer crashed into a family home in the centre of a town in the NSW's Hunter region, police say.

The semi-trailer laden with steel drove through an intersection, through a red light, mounted a footpath, through a fence and then crashed into a house with four people inside.

The accident occurred about 9.20am on Monday on the New England Highway in Rutherford, near Maitland.

The driver, a 43-year-old man from Muswellbrook, was trapped for about 30 minutes but was uninjured.

"There were four people in the house - mum and dad and two kids," Inspector Brian Tracey of Maitland told AAP.

"No one was injured - it's nothing short of a miracle," Insp Tracey said.

"There was tonnes and tonnes of steel on the back of the truck.

"How he didn't hit anyone going through the red light and then crossing to the incorrect side of the road, how he didn't clean-up oncoming traffic, God only knows."

The intersection is on a very busy stretch of the highway.

The driver walked away with a couple of scratches but told emergency services that he may have had a seizure, said Insp Tracey said.

"Also when he went through the front of the house, one of the pillars that holds the veranda up, came through the cabin of the cabin of the truck and just missed his head."

The driver was taken to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

Police will question the man when he is released and say the accident wasn't caused by fatigue.

"He was literally on the road for minutes," Insp Tracey said.

The highway was closed for a couple of hours and has since reopened with the truck removed from the house.
