Truck driver facing jail over bond breach

A South Australian truck driver who was put on a bond over a fatal crash might face jail after driving while disqualified.

An elderly man given a suspended sentence after his truck crashed into a broken-down car, killing a woman, might face prison after admitting driving while disqualified.

Errol David Cain, 70, was given a three-month suspended sentence, disqualified from driving for 10 months and put on a two-year good behaviour bond in October 2012.

In the District Court on Monday, he admitted breaching his bond.

He drove while disqualified in February last year and breached the terms of his firearms licence.

Cain was found guilty of the aggravated count of driving without due care in relation to a February 2010 fatal crash in the Adelaide Hills.

His truck hit and shunted a red Hyundai 140 metres along the South Eastern Freeway, resulting in the death of the 43-year-old driver.

Linda Carter was stopped in the emergency lane after getting a flat tyre and was waiting for help to arrive.

The defence had maintained the sun was in Cain's eyes but the crown said everything pointed to Cain having fallen asleep at the wheel.

He will face a sentence hearing over the breaches on September 4.
