United States Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has launched a tirade of angry social media posts fracturing his own party just four weeks before election day.

In a meltdown unprecedented by a presidential nominee this close to an election, they come after House Speaker Paul Ryan effectively left him without key party support.

In one tweet, Donald Trump writes:

"It is so nice that the shackles have been taken off me and I can now fight for America the way I want to."

Mr Trump has lashed out against Mr Ryan and other Republicans for failing to back him.

"Despite winning the second debate in a landslide, it is hard to do well when Paul Ryan and others give zero support."

It comes as most national opinion polls show Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton increasing her lead over her Republican rival.

But Mr Trump tweets that disloyal Republicans are a bigger threat.

"Disloyal Republicans are far more difficult than crooked Hillary. They come at you from all sides. They don't know how to win. I will teach them."

The social media posts followed a group of women protesting outside Republican National Committee headquarters, where they demanded the party disendorse Mr Trump.

Organiser Yong Jun Cho says the party must withdraw its support.

"Donald Trump is a sexual predator, and the Republican Party needs to take responsibility for the monster that they've created. The Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus and speaker Paul Ryan need to un-endorse Donald Trump."

Mr Trump will have his first chance to demonstrate his "shackle free" approach at a rally in Florida next week.
