Truss talks down further Russia sanctions

Russia's more 'positive approach' to the MH17 disaster meant further sanctions may not be needed, says Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss.

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss has talked down the prospect of further sanctions against Russia, as Europe and the US gear up for tougher measures.

Australia has imposed travel bans and financial sanctions on dozens of Russian and Ukrainian individuals, in response to Moscow's support for separatists.

A Victorian lamb exporter this week unilaterally decided to stop exports to Russia over the continued problems with investigators getting access to the separatist-held MH17 crash site in eastern Ukraine.

The European Union on Thursday added 15 Ukrainian and Russian individuals and 18 entities to the 72 names already hit with visa bans and asset freezes.

European leaders also are considering plans for tougher measures, including cutting off defence exports.

The US has imposed sanctions on Russian energy, defence and financial companies and is also considering further moves.

Mr Truss said individual Australian companies could make their own choices about dealing with Russia.

However, he talked down further moves by the Abbott government.

"Over recent days President Putin and the Russian authorities have adopted a more positive approach and I welcome that," Mr Truss told reporters in Darwin on Friday.

"I think we should build on the assurances that have already been given about the safety of those (investigators) working in that area."
