Stefanos Tsitsipas has became the first Greek tennis player to win an ATP World Tour title when he beat Ernests Gulbis in the final of the Stockholm Open.

The 20-year-old tossed his racquet in the air and put both hands to his head when Gulbis put a forehand into the net to end the 6-4 6-4 match in one hour and 21 minutes.

Tsitsipas had lost his previous two finals, both this year to world No.1 Rafael Nadal.

Gulbis was an easier proposition, though, and Tsitsipas won 80 per cent of his service points and broke the Latvian once in each set.

"Of course I feel happy because I'm the first Greek (to win an ATP title)," world No.16 Tsitsipas said.

"Hopefully many Greek players can achieve something like this. I would be super happy to see them achieve something like this in the future."

Gulbis had won all six of his previous ATP finals but this was his first since 2014, having beaten top-seeded John Isner in the semi-finals.

It was still a great week for Gulbis, who only had four tour-level wins this season before coming to the Swedish capital.

"He played a really good match. He had a great week," Gulbis said.

"I know it's a big deal to win your first ATP title, so enjoy it. I wish that it's not the last one."

Tsitsipas wasn't the only player to claim a breakthrough tournament victory on Sunday with Kyle Edmund defeating Gael Monfils in the European Open final.

The 23-year-old Briton struggled with the occasion in his first ATP final in Marrakech earlier this season but held his nerve in Antwerp to come from a set down to win 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4).

His win over veteran Frenchman Monfils sends Edmund back to a career high of world No.14.

"I'm obviously very happy. A lot of hard work goes into this. So it's just emotional," Edmund said on court.

"You always remember this one. Gael made me work for it today, that's for sure, so credit to him. I'm just so happy."

There was a home winner at the Kremlin Cup as Russian Karen Khachanov defeated France's Adrian Mannarino 6-2 6-2 in less than an hour to claim his third ATP crown.
