European 100-metre hurdles champion Nevin Yanit was banned for two years for doping, the Turkish Athletics Federation said on Wednesday.

The federation said Yanit tested positive for banned substances during a competition in Duesseldorf, Germany, in February. The IAAF said in May that Yanit had "multiple positive findings" in doping tests.

Yanit won the European hurdles title at both the 2010 and 2012 competitions.

The case against Olympic 1,500-metre champion Asli Cakir Alptekin - who has also been accused of doping - is still being assessed.

Turkey has been hit by a series of doping scandals as Istanbul is bidding to host the 2020 Olympics, competing against Tokyo and Madrid. The International Olympic Committee will select the host city on September 7.

Turkey maintains the recent doping cases are proof that the country is working hard to stamp out cheating in sports and the Turkish National Olympic Committee said on Wednesday that Yanit's ban was an indication of its "more aggressive anti-doping policies."

"While any evidence of cheating is a major disappointment for any country, the Turkish NOC welcomes the action taken by the Turkish Athletics Federation," committee president Ugur Erdener said in a statement.

"The top-down approach is sending a clear message to cheats and would-be cheats in Turkey: you have nowhere left to hide."
