South Australia's premier has called on Malcolm Turnbull to make sure Australia's next fleet of submarines is built in Adelaide.

Jay Weatherill said on Tuesday: "An overseas build would be a fatal blow for South Australia's economy, as would a hybrid build.

"The build must be entirely local and must be nothing short of 12 submarines."

Mr Weatherill also appealed for greater federal support before the closure of Holden's assembly plant in 2017, which will leave 1000 workers without jobs.

"Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey did not understand the full impact the closure of Holden would have on South Australia, and so far support from the Commonwealth to assist automotive workers has been insufficient," he said.

Mr Weatherill said he looked forward to working with Mr Turnbull on climate change, an issue about which the new prime minister has previously been outspoken.

He thanked Tony Abbott for his contribution to South Australia's economy.

The now-deposed leader announced on Monday that work on Adelaide's $985 million northern-connector road project will begin early next year.

"We hope these gains made for South Australia, particularly in recent months, are furthered under the incoming prime minister's leadership," Mr Weatherill said.
