Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull is yet to reveal if he will defy the prime minister's orders and appear on the ABC's Q&A program in less than a week.

Mr Turnbull said it will "depend on the circumstances" whether he will keep his scheduled appearance next Monday.

"Time will tell - stay tuned," he told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday night.

Agricultural Minister Barnaby Joyce pulled out of this week's Q&A show, citing a directive from Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Nationals leader Warren Truss said on Tuesday the ban on Q&A appearances imposed on government MPs was made by the coalition leadership team on June 25.

The boycott was in response to the ABC allowing convicted criminal Zaky Mallah to ask a question from the live audience two weeks ago.
