A Sydney maths tutor accused of molesting his students gave one family a discount when it struggled financially, the mother of an alleged victim says.
Quy Huy Hoang, 67, has pleaded not guilty to 12 counts of sexual abuse allegedly committed against his pupils aged between three and eight in their homes from 2007 to 2014.
While giving evidence at Sydney District Court on Friday, the mother of one child said Hoang lowered his tutoring prices to help them because he thought they were "a beautiful family".
"There were times when we were unemployed and struggling to make ends meet, so he dropped down the prices," she said.
"I wanted to give my children an edge in life."
The mother said Hoang, also known as Peter, tutored one of her children for seven years and asked her to install locks on the bedroom door where studying took place.
She said Hoang would often organise "one-on-one time" with students before group sessions because he wanted to "strengthen up their weaknesses".
"That's why I hired him, because he gave that extra time and that little bit of support," she said.
The crown has alleged the teacher brought lubricant to his lessons, for "no other purpose but sexual intercourse".
The court earlier heard the Greystanes man allegedly molested a girl between the ages of three and five by digitally penetrating her, kissing her on the mouth and making her "pinky promise" not to tell her mother.
The trial continues.
