Twins drown in washing machine in India

Twins left alone for a few minutes have drowned in a washing machine in an apartment in New Delhi.

A pair of three-year-old twins have climbed into a top-loading washing machine filled with water and drowned in their apartment in New Delhi.

The accident took place on Saturday in the Rohini area, when the twin's mother stepped out of their residence for about six to seven minutes, said police deputy commissioner MN Tiwari.

The mother left the boys playing in the apartment and stepped out to a local grocery shop to buy washing powder after filling her washing machine with water, according to the police.

"The woman said she had left the door open and when she returned after about six minutes, she could not find her boys," Tiwari said.

The woman called her husband who was at work and they searched for the twins with neighbours before finding them in the machine. They were rushed to a local hospital where they were declared dead.

"Prima facie it looks like an accident," Tiwari said.
