Twitter turns up volume with audio tweets

Cricket Australia and Guy Sebastian have joined Twitter in an initiative to allow users play music and podcasts from their timelines.

Twitter now comes with a soundtrack.

The social media service has introduced audio tweets that users can open with a tap and play in the background as they continue to browse their timelines.

It includes podcasts, music and other sound clips as part of a collaboration with Berlin-based audio-streaming service SoundCloud.

Cricket Australia, broadcaster SBS and singer Guy Sebastian are among more than 50 launch partners.

The National Sound and Film Archive is also on board, tweeting on Friday the oldest known sound recording in Australia - a song called the Hen Convention from 1896.

Twitter has also promised sound clips from the likes of Coldplay, NASA, The White House and the Washington Post with more to come.

"Many more musical artists and creators will be able to share exclusive, in-the-moment audio to millions of listeners on Twitter," the company said in a blog post.

Music-streaming is considered a massive opportunity for tech companies, with Apple and Google having both launched similar services recently.
