Two in five Australians surveyed in a new poll believe heaven and hell await them in the afterlife and angels and demons roam the world.

About one-third of the 1026 people quizzed believe ghosts can bend the wills of the living, aliens have visited earth, and the Genesis story of creation is a true account of the first man and woman.

Almost a quarter weren't sure whether they believed we'd been visited by aliens or not.

One in five Australians believe global warming is a hoax perpetrated by scientists but the vast majority think otherwise, according to the Essential polling released on Tuesday.

The majority of those surveyed over the weekend do not believe vaccines cause autism.

Nor do they believe vibrations from wind farms cause long-term health damage.
