Two drivers have died in a crash on a drenched NSW Hunter highway.

Police say the crash on the New England Highway at Rixs Creek, northwest of Singleton, was a head-on collision between two cars.

The drivers of both vehicles died at the scene, police said.

A NSW Ambulance Service spokeswoman told AAP that two passengers were also injured and briefly trapped in the crash, which happened on Wednesday afternoon.

One person suffered arm injuries while the other had leg and chest injuries.

Both were to be airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

The area has been hard hit by the super storm that has battered NSW.
