Two killed on NSW roads on weekend

Two people died on NSW roads over the Queen's birthday long weekend, down from six deaths last year.

Two people lost their lives on NSW roads over the long weekend, an improvement on last year's death toll of six.

The annual Queen's birthday long weekend traffic-enforcement campaign ran from 12.01am on Friday to 11.59pm on Monday and recorded 600 major crashes.

Just over 4200 drivers were caught speeding in NSW and 272 were charged with drink-driving over the four days when wet weather dampened much of the state.

Last year 4410 people were caught speeding, 439 charged with drink-driving, and there were 681 major crashes, with six fatalities.

Acting NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander Stuart Smith said most drivers heeded safety warnings.

"While we saw a decrease in the number of fatalities this year, unfortunately two lives were still lost," Acting Assistant Commissioner Smith said on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately in a number of these serious crashes it is believed seatbelts were not being worn.

"We need people to listen to the message - seatbelts save lives."

Among the drivers caught behaving badly was a 21-year-old P-plater who was allegedly clocked at 177km/h on the Hume Highway, Thurgoona.

A blood-alcohol test allegedly returned a reading of 0.125 and the man was charged with mid-range drink-driving, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h and consuming alcohol whilst driving, and had his licence suspended on the spot.
