Two young families are lucky to be alive after they escaped from flames engulfing the ceilings of their homes in Melbourne.
A couple and their 18 month-old baby were asleep when they were woken by the noise of their bathroom ceiling collapsing and fire raging in their roof just before 2am (AEDT) on Sunday in Hawthorn.
MFB spokesman Trevor Woodward said crews managed to contain the fire to the roof area before it could spread.
Damage to the roof of the home is expected to cost between $200,000 to $300,000.
Earlier in the evening on Saturday, a mother and her two small children escaped their Hughesdale home after their fire alarm failed.

The fire started in the ceiling before 10pm (AEDT) with the three unaware of the blaze raging only a metre or so above their heads.
Damage to the home is estimated to cost between $300,000 and $400,000.
The cause of the fires is not yet known.
