Two petitions rejecting NSW greyhound ban

Two petitions have surfaced opposing the ban on greyhound racing in New South Wales and they've both almost filled their quota of signatures.

Greyhound racing lobby groups calling for the NSW government to overturn its ban on the sport have gathered more than 7800 supporters on two separate petitions.

The National Greyhound Racing United (NGRU) and Australian Racing Greyhound (ARG) have listed their petitions on change.org.

The ARG has achieved 6713 of the 7500 supporters it is chasing while NGRU has attracted 1122 people to its site, which is aiming to finish with 1500 signatures.

The Baird government announced on Thursday it was shutting down greyhound racing in NSW because of evidence of systemic animal cruelty within the industry.

The ban comes into effect from July 1, 2017.

The NGRU states owners, trainers and greyhound supporters should not give up and the industry is capable of reforming.

"We can REFORM, we can continue to give back to COMMUNITIES, and we can give every dog a CHANCE. We are not the enemy, we love our hounds too," the NGRU petition reads.

The ARG says NSW Premier Mike Baird and Racing Minister Troy Grant made the decision without proper consultation.

The ARG also concedes there are some people who have done some "horrible wrongs" but not everyone should be punished.

"We are the first people to acknowledge there have been some horrible wrongs, including live baiting and cases of animal cruelty, but to shut down the entire industry to the detriment of 1000s is ridiculous," the petition states.

Supporters have also spoken of the hardship they'll encounter when racing ceases.

"I now own a breeding and rearing facility. How am I going to make the mortgage repayments on my property if I can no longer operate my business?" wrote Jessica Britton on the ARG's petition page.

"I have no problem with severe punishments for those doing the wrong this but don't tarnish us all with the same brush."

Hobart's Carol Timbrell, who fosters retired greyhounds, said they were well adjusted dogs suited to life as a pet.

"I think banning racing is a lazy way of dealing with corrupt and cruel people," she posted.

Queensland and Victoria say they will not ban the sport but owners and trainers are under notice about their training and handling methods.
