Two rescued from floods on Gold Coast

Heavy rainfall has continued to cause headaches in southeast Queensland, with two people rescued from floodwaters on the Gold Coast.

Two people on the Gold Coast have been rescued from floodwaters as heavy rain continues to wreak havoc on southeast Queensland.

Police have confirmed a 15-year-old boy was rescued after emergency services workers found him down an embankment in Currumbin.

It took an hour for them to pull the stranded teenager to safety with special ropes near the Currumbin Rock Pool.

Meanwhile, in Bonogin a man had to be plucked from the roof of his car after it got caught in rising torrents.

He was taken to Robina Hospital after paramedics assessed him at the Bonogin Rural Fire Station.

The hospital itself was also caught out by the wet conditions when the ground level of its car park was inundated.

A sinkhole also reportedly opened up on Tamborine-Oxenford Rd and damaged more than 10 cars on the road.

In other parts of the state's south-east, the heavy rain triggered rock slides and traffic closures.

Emergency services confirmed they'd received 233 requests for assistance by early Friday afternoon, with 116 for the Brisbane region.

More than 10 flights, mostly from Coolangatta, were also diverted to Brisbane Airport.

A woman was been taken to hospital with a broken collarbone following a collision between a tram and a car at Surfers Paradise.

The southeast district should brace for a further 100-150mm by Saturday morning, the Bureau of Meteorology warns.

Deluges of up to 80mm had already fallen on the coast, with Gympie and the Sunshine Coast hardest hit so far.

The bureau predicts the ongoing rainfall will continue to affect the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Maroochydore, Gympie, Bundaberg, Ipswich, Moreton Bay and islands, Kingaroy, Noosa, Hervey Bay, Fraser Island and Hervey Bay waters.

But the low pressure system shouldn't dampen Australia Day festivities.

It's forecast a shower or storm will crop up later in the day, but shouldn't disrupt mostly fine conditions for the public holiday.
