Tye joins ODI squad, Kane Richardson hurt

Australia have been forced to make a change to their ODI squad in India, with Andrew Tye to replace injured paceman Kane Richardson.

Andrew Tye has been added to Australia's ODI squad after a side injury forced paceman Kane Richardson to return home from India.

Richardson's misfortune, which came after a dominant BBL campaign in which he was the leading wicket-taker and led Melbourne Renegades to the title, has given Tye an unexpected chance to press his claims for Word Cup selection.

Tye joins fellow quicks Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff in the touring party.

The five-match ODI series, which both sides have described as a key tune-up for the World Cup, starts on Saturday.

The entire series spans 12 days, while Australia also head to the UAE for a five-match series against Pakistan next month.

It means Tye, a late bloomer renowned for his variations, is likely to be given a chance to shine at some point.

The West Australian and Shaun Marsh, who missed the Twenty20 leg of the tour to be home for the birth of his second child, will link up with the squad in Hyderabad on Thursday.

The most recent of Tye's seven ODIs came last year in England, when he finished with figures of 0-100 at Trent Bridge and became the second Australian bowler in history to concede 100 runs in an ODI.

The 32-year-old remained on the radar of selectors after that onslaught from World Cup favourites England and has since played 14 T20 internationals.

"They communicated to me when I got dropped as to why I was dropped," Tye said last month.

"They just said I was a bit unreliable in the powerplay.

"I definitely don't feel like I'm out of contention. I'd like to think I'm still part of the World Cup picture."

Competition for places in Australia's 15-man World Cup squad is fierce, especially among the bowlers.

Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are all automatic selections if fit but Starc (pec) and Hazlewood (back) are both currently sidelined.

Medicos are unsure of the severity of Kane Richardson's setback but missing the Indian series does not bode well for the 28-year-old's hopes of being part of Australia's World Cup defence.

"Kane reported some left side pain at training prior to the opening T20I in Vizag," team physio David Beakley said.

"Unfortunately he has not recovered well enough in order to play a further part in the tour.

"Kane will return home to continue his rehabilitation and we will monitor his progress over the coming weeks."
