CARE is asking Australians to support its global appeal to raise $5 million for the families devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in southeast Asia.

Authorities in the area fear the powerful typhoon has killed more than 10,000 people in the Philippines.

The typhoon then made its way to Vietnam and southern China, forcing thousands of people to relocate.

The Chief Executive of CARE Australia, Julia Newton-Howes has warned the impact of the typhoon will be felt by the residents for a long time.

Ms Newton-Howes has told Zara Zaher the focus of the aid will be on providing essentials such as shelter, water and food to communities hardest hit by the disaster.
