A powerful typhoon has toppled electricity transmission lines and trees as it triggered landslides and floods that left at least nine people dead in the northern Philippines, local officials say.
Seven people were killed in the mountainous Benguet province, nearly 200 kilometres north of Manila, due to several landslides, according to Governor Nestor Fongwan.
"We have recovered three bodies early Saturday and are still digging for two more in the town of Mankayan," he said.
Fongwan said two bodies were recovered on Friday in the nearby town of Itogon.
"The victims were living at the foot of the mountains and were not able to leave their homes because of heavy rains," Fongwan said.
In adjacent Mountain province, a 10-year-old boy was buried by a landslide.
A taxi driver was killed by a falling tree and the passenger was injured in nearby Ilocos Norte province, provincial police said.
Typhoon Goni weakened slightly on Saturday, according to the weather bureau.
The eye of the storm was located 125 kilometres northeast of Calayan Island in the northernmost province of Cagayan, the agency said.
