Friendly football matches will become a thing of the past in Europe, with UEFA to launch the Nations League, which will provide an additional chance to qualify for Euro 2020.

The continent will be divided into four groups based on rankings. The top teams play each other, while the likes of Andorra will only  take on other countries near the bottom rung.

The winner of each group will get an automatic berth in Euro 2020.

UEFA President Michel Platini said players, fans and, perhaps most tellingly, TV networks are only interested in games that have real consequences.

In World Cup news, referees will now carry spray paint, along with their whistles and red and yellow cards.

A dissolving foam will be used to mark the exact spot a free kick is given, with the aim of ending arguments about whether a player has placed the ball in the correct position.

It will also make it easier for referees to mark off the distance for a defensive wall, and let’s face it, they need all the help they can get.
