Khabib Nurmagomedov has been fined $500,000 ($A700,000) and suspended for nine months for his role in a brawl after his world title fight with Conor McGregor at UFC 229.

McGregor was fined $50,000 ($A70,000) and suspended for six months for his actions post-fight.

UFC lightweight champion Nurmagomedov has been handed the heavier punishment, having instigated the unsavoury scenes after his dominant four-round stoppage victory over the outspoken McGregor.

Nurmagomedov's suspension can be reduced to six months if he participates with Las Vegas police in an anti-bullying public service announcement (PSA), according to a settlement approved Tuesday by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NSAC).

The fine will be taken from the Russian's $2million ($A2.8m) share of the purse for the October 6 fight.

The suspensions for both fighters are retroactive to October 6.

After he forced the McGregor to tap and end their highly-anticipated fight, the 30-year-old Nurmagomedov threw his mouthguard towards his opponent's corner, scaled the octagon and attempted to attack the Irishman's teammate Dillon Danis.

While that was happening, McGregor was involved in altercations with a couple of members of Nurmagomedov's team who had entered the octagon.

Two of Nurmagomedov's training partners - Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov - were issued one-year suspensions and each fined $25,000 ($A35,000) for their roles in the melee.

Nurmagomedov reacted to Tuesday's news in an Instagram post.

Alongside a picture of himself reclining on a sofa with his eyes closed, the Russian wrote: "Wake me up, when it's all over."

A message from the 30-year-old's official Twitter account read: "Politics forever."

Nurmagomedov has said previously that he was being unfairly punished.

He complained that discipline didn't follow an incident last April in Brooklyn, New York, when McGregor shattered windows on Nurmagomedov's bus with a hand trolley.
