Ugandan athletics coach charged with rape

Ugandan police charge the athletics coach at the centre of rape allegations voiced by Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion Moses Kipsiro.

An athletics coach in Uganda has been charged with raping three teenage girls he was coaching.

Peter Wemali was arrested following accusations that he raped three young runners, who are all under 18, police spokesman Fred Enanga said on Thursday.

Wemali was transferred to the eastern town of Kapchorwa, where the alleged offences took place, and charged. Wemali refused to enter a plea. He has been suspended from working.

Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion Moses Kipsiro had accused Wemali of sexually harassing female athletes last year. Wemali was cleared following an investigation.

Last month, Kipsiro claimed Wemali sent him a death threat on his mobile phone, causing Kipsiro to pull out of the cross-country world championships. Police said they were still investigating the death threat allegations.
