A British nurse who contracted Ebola while working in Sierra Leone has returned to the country after treatment in London.

Medical group King's Health Partners says William Pooley is due to start work on Monday at an Ebola isolation unit it runs in Freetown.

Pooley was flown back to Britain in August and treated in an isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital, where he received the experimental drug ZMapp.

In a statement on Sunday, Pooley thanked everyone responsible for his care, but added that "the real emergency is in West Africa, and the teams out there need all the support we can give them".

Britain has pledged STG125 million ($A228 million) to combat Ebola in West Africa, and Prime Minister David Cameron has urged other wealthy countries to do more.
