UK woman charged over cocaine in lava lamp

A UK woman will face a Sydney court after allegedly concealing liquid cocaine in a lava lamp.

A British cruise ship passenger will face court after she allegedly attempted to smuggle 1.5 litres of liquid cocaine in a lava lamp.

The woman, 22, was stopped by customs officers at White Bay Cruise Terminal in Sydney on Tuesday after disembarking from a cruise ship from New Caledonia.

Initial tests on liquid inside a lava lamp returned positive results for cocaine and triggered a response from a customs dog.

Customs officers contacted the Australian Federal Police, who charged the woman with importing a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug.

Further tests will be conducted to determine the purity and weight of the substance.

"No matter the concealment method or entry point, our officers are alert to those who attempt to breach our border," said Demetrio Veteri, a customs deputy national director.

If found guilty, the woman faces a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $850,000.

She's due to appear in Sydney's Central Local Court on Thursday.
