UK's junior doctors start 48-hour strike

Britain's junior doctors have begun a 48-hour strike, providing only emergency care, in a contract dispute with the government.

Thousands of junior doctors in England have started a 48-hour strike to protest terms of a new contract with the government.

The work stoppage that started on Wednesday morning marks the fourth time the doctors have gone on strike in the protracted dispute over weekend pay and Saturday work rules.

The doctors object to the new rules imposed by the government, which says it will make the National Health Service a full seven-day-per-week operation.

During the strike the junior doctors are only providing emergency care.

A strike called for later in April would also include emergency care. That would mark the first total shutdown by junior doctors since the NHS was founded in 1948.
