The Australian government has been spared international embarrassment by UNESCO over its management of the Great Barrier Reef.
UNESCO at a meeting in Qatar has threatened to list the reef as endangered due to its degradation and management as a World Heritage site.
The federal government and the resource industry says that's not so and UNESCO has given it another 12 months to prove it.
Stefan Armbruster is in Townsville where he's been speaking with scientists, environmental groups and tourism operators.
He spoke with Peggy Giakoumelos about what the decision means for the government.
