The United Nations refugee agency has criticised Australia's immigration detention centre in Papua New Guinea, saying it doesn't meet international standards.
In its second report on the Manus Island processing centre, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees says while there were some improvements since its last visit in January, there are still major shortcomings.
The UNHCR has praised the Australian government's decision to remove the last remaining children from the facility last week and for pushing ahead with plans for a permanent centre which is scheduled to be completed in January.
However, a regional spokesman for the UNHCR in Canberra, Ben Farrell, has told Michael Kenny, he believes there is still a lot more work needed to ensure that asylum seekers are treated with dignity in PNG.
