Education Minister Christopher Pyne believes his university reforms are too important to put off until after the next federal election.

Mr Pyne is persisting with a push to deregulate university fees, twice stymied by the Senate, despite calls for a comprehensive review or to put them off for voters to decide.

"We can't wait on reform, its it's too important," he told reporters in Adelaide on Wednesday, pointing out the next federal election wasn't due until late 2016.
