The United Nations children's agency is calling for increased support from the international community as South Sudan edges towards a full scale famine.

Intense violence has displaced more than a million people inside the country.

Fighting erupted in South Sudan last December after months of tensions sparked by President Salva Kiir's decision to fire longtime rival Riek Machar from the deputy president's position.

UNICEF Australia says the unrest is directly threatening South Sudan's children, at risk from malnutrition, poor hygiene and insecurity.

The organisation's James Elder is in South Sudan's capital, Juba.

He spoke to Zara Zaher about the challenges faced by humanitarian workers amid the violence.
