Unions want ALP to reject China trade deal

A group of unions are meeting with Labor trade spokeswoman Penny Wong to ask the party to take a stronger stance on international trade deals.

A group of unions are demanding Labor strengthen its position on international trade agreements to protect Australian jobs.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union, Transport Workers' Union, Electrical Trades Union, Australian Workers' Union, Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union of Australia, Maritime Union of Australia and Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union have accused Labor of "ducking and weaving on trade policy" and called on the opposition to reject the recently signed free trade agreement with China.

The unions will meet opposition trade spokeswoman Penny Wong on Friday but have threatened to force movement on the issue at the ALP's national conference next week if they don't get the assurances they want.
