An unknown substance which was discovered by an 87-year-old retired chemist in his Sydney home has been safely removed by police.

An unknown substance which was found by a retired chemist in Sydney has been removed from his home.

The 87-year-old man discovered the chemical, which has been deemed unsuspicious, and called emergency services just after 9am on Friday, police say.

Specialist forces worked with NSW Fire and Rescue to safely remove the chemical from the Hammondville home.
