Unprovoked attack targets elderly Vic man

Police have appealed for witnesses following the unprovoked beating of an elderly man as he walked along the street in Melbourne.

Victoria police are seeking public help after an elderly man was pushed to the ground and attacked with a roll of black plastic bags while walking in Albert Park.

The 79-year-old was walking along Dundas Place about 10am on November 29 when he was suddenly approached from behind and pushed to the ground, police said on Wednesday.

He was repeatedly punched and hit with the roll of bags, as well as being verbally abused by his attacker, who then grabbed his victim's mobile phone and smashed it on the pavement.

The victim suffered bruises and cuts during the incident, while his attacker fled and was last seen heading south on Dundas Place towards Albert Road.

Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the assault, or who may have information.
