Unsafe toys found in pre-Christmas blitz

Parents are being urged to choose kids' Christmas presents carefully as NSW government cracks down on traders selling unsafe toys.

Almost 60 NSW traders have been found selling dangerous toys during a pre-Christmas crackdown, with $2 and pop-up shops the worst offenders.

NSW Fair Trading inspectors found 83 types of non-compliant toys being sold by 57 traders during pre-Christmas checks at 773 businesses across the state in recent weeks, Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello said.

A singing Elsa, Thomas the Tank Engine, a Peppa Pig set and an Angry Bird are among toys from major franchises removed from shelves during the blitz.

Toys that posed choking and inhalation risks and others that failed labelling rules to prevent drownings were also found.

Of the toys inspected, 68 contained dangerous, small parts that represented an inhalation and ingestion hazard for children aged up to three years.

Five aquatic toys failed labelling rules for toys to minimise the risk of drowning intended for children under 14 years.

Mr Dominello asked families to remain vigilant in the lead-up to Christmas to make sure no potentially lethal toys made it under their tree.
