'Unusual' weather stuns BOM veteran

A 20-year Bureau of Meteorology veteran says he's never seen snow fall so low at this time of year in Victoria.

Snowfalls across southern Victoria have stunned a veteran Bureau of Meteorology forecaster.

The bureau's senior forecaster of 20 years, Richard Carlyon, says a strong cold front has seen snow fall at 500 metres in The Grampians, the Dandenongs and Kinglake area on Wednesday.

"It's unusual," he said.

"I've never seen snow fall at this low a level this early in the year before."

Victoria's ski fields, including Mount Buller, have also had some snow almost a month ahead of the official start to the season.

At Falls Creek, temperatures dipped to minus 5.1C overnight Tuesday through Wednesday, the coldest so far this year.

However, warmer weather is expected to make a return come the weekend, with Sunday tipped to reach 19C in Melbourne.
