US airport rejects Bieber-inspired artwork

An artist who made multicoloured letters of the word "belieber" for an airport display has been forced to take his work home.

Officials at Indianapolis International Airport have grounded artwork inspired by troubled pop star Justin Bieber.

The airport had hired Tre Reising to make an art display for one of the passenger concourses.

An airport spokesman told local station WISH-TV that managers expected a display about hip hop and art. Instead, Reising made multicoloured letters of the word "belieber", which the singer uses as a tag to describe his fans.

The airport is still paying Reising the $US500 ($A555.46) promised for the artwork.

The artist told WTHR-TV he understands the airport's decision. He said he thought travellers would have fun taking photos of the artwork and sharing them online.

Reising will take the piece back to his current home in New York City and hopes to eventually put it on display.
