US diplomat hails Australia gay leadership

Australia should be proud of its long history of leadership on gay rights and equality, United States ambassador John Berry believes.

United States ambassador John Berry sees no impediment to Australia legalising same-sex marriage just as his country has done.

Mr Berry, who has long campaigned for gay rights, said Australia should have nothing but pride for its record on issues affecting homosexual and transgender people, even if on this particular matter the US had briefly overtaken it.

He and husband Curtis Yee had found nothing but the warmest of welcomes from everyone in Australia, including gay marriage opponent Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Mr Berry told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.
