Rising Australian golf star Cameron Davis has drawn rich praise from American ace Brooks Koepka after finishing the British Open with a flurry at Carnoustie.
Davis round out an impressive major championship debut with a birdie-filled final-round 70 that matched the two-time US Open winner down the stretch.
The 23-year-old - who earned a start at the Open with a stunning victory at last year's Australian Open - was headed towards a top-50 finish.
"He's got a lot of game, strikes it really well, a very controlled putter. He's got a good future ahead of him," Koepka told AAP after seeing Davis rattle in six birdies on championship Sunday.
"I tried to play a bit more aggressive off the tee and give myself a few more shorter shots into the greens, which for the most part worked really well," Davis said after finishing at a highly respectable one over for the 72 holes.
"For the most part this week, I played pretty solid tee to green. If my putting was a bit sharper, I could have done a bit better but for the most part I did a really good job."
Koepka noted that Davis had already won on the secondary in 2018 and said the Sydney youngster had "all the tools to make it" among the world's elite.
"Just keep going. He's doing a good job," was the American's advice to Davis.
"He understands what he's doing. He flights it well and his short game seems to be pretty good too.
"So he's got all the tools to make it. It's about timing sometimes."
Davis was thrilled to hear about Koepka's praise.
"It was pretty cool to play against a guy who's won majors to see how your game stacks up against him," he said.
"I feel like when I play my good golf, I can match it pretty well with them.
"Obviously he's got a bit more experience on this stage so the aim is to try to get a few more of these under my belt so I can catch up.
"I'm just going to take out of here that I've got a good enough game to compete at a major.
"So I'll just take it to the next few tournaments on the Web.com Tour and work my way up the money list again and try to get myself into the top 125.
"That's the next goal."
