Adam Scott says he is desperate to finish the Memorial tournament with a bang and shore up a US Open berth to avoid a gruelling sixth consecutive week of golf.
At world No.65, Scott needs to climb inside the top 60 who qualify for Shinnecock Hills, and avoid a significant slide before the field is all but finalised on June 11.
A top-five result at Memorial would give Scott a red-hot chance and he is within reach after a two-under-par 70 in the third round left him sharing 11th at eight under, six shots off the pace.
Bryson DeChambeau fired a 66 at Muirfield Village to climb to 14 under and he will take a one-shot cushion into the final day over Patrick Cantlay (66), Kyle Stanley (70) and 19-year-old Joaquinn Niemann (70).
Playing his fifth successive week on the US PGA Tour, Scott said avoiding 36-hole US Open sectional qualifying on Monday and next week's FedEx St Jude Classic - his two options - are his motivation for a low final round.
"Absolutely, that'd be really good; I'm one good round from everything going to plan," Scott told AAP.
Scott has struck the ball beautifully at the Jack Nicklaus-hosted event - ranking in the top seven for strokes gained off the tee and approach play - but a cold putter has been his achilles heel.
The 2013 Masters winner missed four birdie putts inside seven feet on day three.
However, he did scramble gallantly on the four greens he missed, saving par on all of them to sign a bogey-free scorecard.
"I'm hitting good putts, I'm just not reading them very well," Scott said.
"It's just a matter of getting the putter hot; it's hardly hurting me, the scores are pretty good and I feel it's not far away."
Scott is determined to qualify for the US Open and keep his remarkable active streak in the majors alive.
Having played every major since the 2001 British Open, Scott's 67 straight is second only to Sergio Garcia (75).
